The consumption of alcoholic beverages is trivialized among young people, especially in a festive setting. Alcohol consumption, what are the risks?

Once consumed, alcohol passes quickly into the blood and spreads throughout the body and affects brain function. The brain impacts consciousness and perceptions, as well as body behaviors and functions. High-dose alcohol consumption can then represent an immediate risk (malaise and alcoholic comas, accidents, risky sexual intercourse, violence), with risks of death, but also a longer-term risk (dependence and occurrence of diseases ).

What benchmarks of consumption?

To reduce the risks, it is recommended to limit its consumption to two glasses and not
every day (…) and a maximum of 4 standard drinks per occasion (cf. units of alcohol) per day maximum and not to consume alcohol every day.

What is a standard drink or unit of alcohol?

In authorized drinking establishments, the alcohols served all contain the same quantity
of pure alcohol per glass, approximately 10 grams. This corresponds to a “glass
standard” or a “unit of alcohol”. Some drinks are more concentrated in pure alcohol than others, but in this case they are served in smaller quantities. To identify them, you have to look at the volume percentage (%) or degree (°) written on the bottles.

Attention : There is no miracle recipe: only time can reduce your blood alcohol level
(spoonful of oil, shower, coffee… will not eliminate alcohol any faster)! Based on standard glasses to estimate your blood alcohol level, it’s approximate: you have to
test with a breathalyzer before driving, and never less than an hour after
last drink!

Binge-drinking, also called “API (significant occasional alcohol consumption)” consists of drinking

occasionally alcohol in very large quantities and in very short times. The goal is to get drunk as quickly as possible, despite the dangers. It’s the modern version of “drinking games”.

Alcoholization without ingestion: exotic practices of contact of alcohol with the mucous membranes (anal, vaginal, eyes…) with a soaked medium (tampon, sanitary napkin…).

What advice so that alcohol does not spoil the party?

I eat before leaving in the evening and during the evening,

I alternate alcoholic drinks and non-alcoholic drinks or ideally water,

I always carry a bottle of water and I drink it regularly to avoid dehydration and hangovers,

I try not to enter into the logic of “tours” and “drinking games” which push me to drink larger quantities very quickly than expected,

What the law says ?

In France, driving with a blood alcohol level equal to or greater than 0.2g/L with a probationary license or 0.5g/L for a confirmed driver constitutes a fine. The penalties vary depending on whether or not the level exceeds 0.8 g/L of blood, which then constitutes an offence. Attention for the probationary permits, 0.2g/L of blood, it is generally zero glass of alcohol because from the first glass, this threshold can be exceeded.

The sale and free offer of alcohol to minors in drinking establishments and all businesses or public places is prohibited, including on “student evenings”.

Advertising for alcoholic beverages is strictly supervised, including on “student evenings”.

On foot, by bike or on horseback, obvious drunkenness on the public highway exposes you to penalties which can go as far as the withdrawal of your licence, even if you were not driving.
