Are smartphones vectors of bacteria?

It’s your little companion, you take it everywhere with you, you’re inseparable… We’re talking about your smartphone.

According to a recent study from the University of California, San Diego, we touch our smartphones 110 to 150 times a day. A veritable nest of bacteria, it contains more microbes than public toilets!!!

The results of the survey by the company Initial, a specialist in smart hygiene solutions, revealed that out of 50 smartphones examined, the plastic covers contain 7 times more germs than a toilet bowl. On leather cases, especially the classic wallet model, this amount of bacteria is 17 times greater.

According to the same survey, conducted among 2,000 people, 40% of respondents said they used their mobile while they were in the bathroom and only 20% cleaned their phones afterwards.

In terms of the distribution of germs, they are more present on the edges and in the interstices. On smooth surfaces, they are more difficult to accumulate.

What are the dangers for human health?

You have to ingest a certain number of bacteria to get sick. By dint of accumulating, some can have serious consequences on your health. It is therefore important to clean your smartphone at least once a week.

How to disinfect your smartphone

Before you start, remember to turn off your smartphone and unplug it from any power source. Then remove the hulls which can be disinfected with more powerful products, provided they are dried carefully.

Then prepare your disinfectant solution. Denatured alcohol is not a disinfectant, but a bacteriostat, it inhibits bacteria temporarily without killing them. Solvents, disinfectants and ammonia-based products should be avoided. The same goes for bleach or detergents that contain it. On the other hand, 70% ethanol completely eliminates microbes.

Using a disinfectant wipe containing ethyl alcohol, gently clean the visible surfaces of your smartphone, such as the screen, the keyboard and the cover, using small circular movements. It is in these elements that most bacteria are concentrated.

You can also moisten a soft, lint-free microfiber cloth in a disinfectant solution, based on alcohol (70%) and distilled water (30%). The mixture of vinegar (50%) and distilled water (50%) is also a good solution if ethyl alcohol is not available.

It is important that the fabric is not too wet. Avoid paper handkerchiefs and abrasive fabrics.

To clean the connectors and sensitive parts of the smartphone, you can use a cotton swab or a soft brush.

Finally, don’t forget to dry your phone well before turning it back on. Use a clean, dry cloth to remove moisture. A clean smartphone is good, but if it also works, it’s better.

And for the accessories?

For wireless headphones, such as Apple AirPods, or Smartwatches, it is better to opt for a microfiber cloth.

The Apple Watch is splash-proof, you can rinse it under a gentle stream of warm running water for about 15 seconds.

For all other gadgets, read the manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning and maintenance.

For telephones, it is important to repeat the operation at least once a week.
