My car has been stolen, what do I do?
If your car has been stolen, you must report the theft to the authorities and to the insurance.
You must immediately report the theft to the local police or gendarmerie authorities. You have 24 hours to report the theft to the authorities. You can dial the local police number or call the emergency numbers 101 or 112.
If the papers of the car were inside, do not forget to specify it to the authorities.
Declaring the theft allows the police to establish the description of the vehicle and launch the search to find it. This process is mandatory because it relieves you of all liability if ever an accident occurs after the theft of your car.
Once your complaint has been filed, a certificate of complaint will be given to you.
Before going to the police station or the gendarmerie to report the theft and file a complaint, you must complete a pre-complaint online.
Report the theft of your car to your insurer
If you are insured against theft, you have 24 to 48 working hours to declare it to your insurer.
You must then send the proof of declaration of the theft or the certificate of filing of a complaint to your insurer.
Even if you are not insured against theft, you must inform your insurance company. This will avoid problems in case of an accident with your stolen car.
Here are the documents required and the information to provide to your insurer:
- a copy of the attestation of the filing of the complaint;
- the grey card ;
- your insurance contract number;
- the circumstances of the theft.
In which cases can I benefit from compensation?
You must have taken out a theft guarantee to be able to benefit from compensation in the event of the theft of your car.
The theft guarantee compensates you in the following cases:
- your car was stolen;
- part of your car was stolen;
- your car was damaged after an attempted theft.
The theft guarantee does not cover the theft of personal belongings or property in the car, such as your handbag or a laptop computer for example.
In which cases does the theft guarantee not cover the theft of my car?
You absolutely must report the theft of your car to the authorities within 24 hours, otherwise the warranty will not cover the theft.
With most insurers, car theft is not covered if the vehicle key, spare key and remote control were inside the vehicle. This rule is valid for most insurance companies. Hence the obligation to present the key and the spare key to your insurer when you declare the theft.
In case you have lost the car keys, you will have to replace them as soon as possible.
Above all, ensure that the keys are included in the report in the event of home-jacking or car-jacking.
The theft guarantee will not intervene to cover you if your car does not have an additional anti-theft or after-theft system.
If it is a model of expensive cars, convertibles or brands susceptible to theft, anti-theft or after-theft systems must definitely be installed. In this case, you will not be covered for the theft of your car.
Cars over 60,000 euros, for example, must have an anti-car-jacking system.
What about compensation?
Generally, an auto insurance contract provides for a period of 30 days after the declaration of the theft to pay you the indemnity. This period corresponds to a period during which your car can be found. Once the 30 days have passed, your insurance will pay you compensation. If your contract provides a theft guarantee, of course.
What happens if my stolen car is found?
If your car is found within 30 days, you can recover it and your insurance will cover the repair of the damage caused.
If your car is found after the 30 day period, you can either
- Keep the compensation paid by your insurer for the total loss of the vehicle and it is the insurance company that recovers the car.
- Take your car back and repair the damage. But you will have to reimburse the insurance company for the compensation received, minus the repair costs you incurred.
