Cabin baggage and hold baggage

Have you finished packing your bags to start the great adventure? To make your plane trip go smoothly, check the checklist of authorized and unauthorized items before closing your luggage!

Cabin baggage: what you need to know

Hand luggage, also called cabin luggage, is a travel bag that you can take with you on the plane, unlike checked luggage, which goes in the hold.

Please note that this baggage cannot exceed 8 to 12 kilos per passenger.

The dimensions of the suitcase must also not exceed: 55 cm x 35 x 25 cm or 55 cm x 40 cm x 20 cm maximum (according to International Air Transport Association – IATA).

Take the time to check, some companies adopt special rules in terms of size, weight and number of items allowed in the cabin.

Items prohibited in the cabin

  • Ammunition or cartridges intended for hunting or sporting weapons
  • Liquid products exceeding 100ml: perfume, shower gel, shampoo, lotion, toothpaste
  • Cosmetic products and aerosols beyond a 100ml bottle
  • Firearms
  • Edged weapons, and more generally any blunt, cutting object whether metallic or not (scissors, blade, cutter, etc.)

For your comfort, take a change of clothes or at least some underwear in your hand luggage, especially if your flight is a long-haul one.

Checked baggage: what you need to know

Checked baggage is the baggage you check in at the counter and which is transported in the hold of the plane.

You are allowed to put:

  • Liquids, creams, gels and pastes in containers larger than 100ml
  • Sharp items, including scissors
  • Knives with blades of any length
  • Hypodermic needles (unless necessary for medical reasons, for which proof will be required)
  • Walking/hiking poles
  • baseball bats
  • Darts
  • Pool or snooker cues

Be careful, you must take into account the weight of your luggage, and check the weight limits with your airline.

Items prohibited in the hold

For safety reasons, most airlines prohibit sharp objects or any object that could be used as a weapon. So we forget:

  • Dangerous and flammable products (fireworks or gasoline, lighters…) and also gases (such as CO2 cartridges)
  • Electronic devices that run on lithium batteries (must be in your hand luggage).
  • Arms
  • Powerful cleaning fluids: bleach, thinner, acetone, chlorine, etc.
  • Mercury thermometers and barometers
  • Printer cartridges

What about transporting medication?

Before transporting your medication on an airplane, find out about the restrictions specific to your airline and your destination.

If you have a treatment that requires the use of syringes, needles, consider taking a medical prescription.

Your medications must be stored under specific conditions (temperature, humidity). Take them in their original packaging and use a transparent bag to facilitate security checks.

Remember to divide your medication into two batches, part in your cabin baggage and another in the hold. In case of loss of luggage, you will have something to hold on to.
