Contraception: instructions for use

HEYME wellness package

Choosing the right method of contraception is quite a difficult decision to make. Pill, IUD, condom, patch, several solutions exist to avoid unplanned pregnancies. Let’s go around the subject.

How does contraception work?

A woman’s body (unlike a man’s) works in cycles, lasting an average of 28 days. Each month, an egg is expelled from the ovary and makes its way to the uterus. Two cases arise:

  • The egg is fertilized by a spermatozoon and the egg formed will attach itself to the wall of the uterus (cozy nest created by the endometrium)
  • The ovum is not fertilized, it will therefore be evacuated with the “little nest”, these are the periods or rules.

Contraception is what allows reversibly and temporarily to avoid pregnancy, through the use of various devices.

What are the different types of contraceptives?

Contraception is a subject on which we are very poorly informed and we tend to believe that only the sacrosanct pill is a reliable contraceptive.

Breaking news: it’s not true! Certainly there is the pill, but there is also the implant, the IUD, the vaginal ring, the patch, the diaphragm, spermicides, the cervical cap or even abstinence. You’re spoiled for choice, it’s all about finding a contraceptive that fits your lifestyle. For example, if you have a goldfish memory, avoid the pill because you’ll forget it every other night and that’s okay. Conversely, if you don’t have a lot of experience, the cervical cap will frankly seem like a hassle to use. Moral of the story: find a doctor you feel comfortable talking to.

Contraception: the most frequently asked questions

Is the emergency pill effective?

Emergency contraception or the morning after pill is a single tablet to be taken after a risky sexual intercourse. It is a backup method of contraception. This pill is effective, but you have to act quickly. Emergency contraception can be used up to 72 hours after unprotected sex, but is most effective in the first 12 hours.

Attention! You should not consider emergency contraception as a regular contraceptive. If you take it often, you may need a longer-lasting method of contraception. It is better to prevent unwanted pregnancies by asking your gynecologist for advice. He will prescribe the method of contraception best suited to your needs.

Do I need contraception if my partner withdraws at the last minute?

Withdrawal is not a good method of contraception! Sperm leakage during intercourse can cause pregnancy.

Can a condom fail?

A poorly worn or mishandled condom can fail. Also, if the expiry date of the condom has passed, it may tear or fall off during intercourse.

Can a condom be reused?

The condom is for single use. It is strongly advised not to reuse a condom! It’s a high-risk practice, since there’s semen in it.

What is the best method of contraception?

The best birth control method is the one that works best for you.

Attention :

No contraceptive method is 100% effective.

Not all birth control methods protect you against Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs). Only condoms remain effective against STIs.
