According to several Western studies, the lifting of restrictions on December 7 could lead to the death of around one million people in the coming months. Already, many hospitals are overwhelmed and pharmacies are reporting a shortage of fever medication.
Many crematoriums interviewed by AFP have reported an unusually high influx of bodies to be cremated. In Chongqing, a city with more than 30 million inhabitants, one of the crematoriums no longer has enough space to store new bodies. The large metropolis of Canton, in the south of the country, populated by 19 million inhabitants, announced the postponement “after January 10” funeral ceremonies.
