Peru President Pedro Castillo deposed and placed in detention

In addition to this institutional chaos, justice has opened several investigations for suspicions of corruption or influence peddling directly involving President Castillo or his entourage. Searches took place in the general secretariat of the presidency and even in the family residence of the Castillos. Justice has even filed a constitutional complaint accusing him of the offense of criminal organization of corruption, a first for a head of state in the country. In total, he is the subject of six separate investigations, but benefited, until his dismissal, from presidential immunity.

The new president of Peru, Dina Boluarte, a 60-year-old lawyer from Castillo’s party, made known, upon her inauguration, her desire to form an open government or call for early elections. Until then, she will be able to remain at the head of the country until July 2026, when Castillo’s mandate ends.
