In the heart of Extremadura, it is providential water, and above all free, that this farmer runs in his fields every morning, as he demonstrates in the TF1 report at the top of this article. This water is diverted directly from the mountain, thanks to thousand-year-old irrigation canals called “acequias moriscas“, THE “Moorish ditches” in French. They were in fact dug as early as the eighth century, during the time of the Muslim domination of the Iberian Peninsula.
