Should everyone be accepted on Linkedin?

Managing your e-reputation means taking control of your presence on the web. On Linkedin, your network of contacts or acquaintances can say a lot about your personality or your interests. It is therefore important to evaluate all connection requests to improve the quality of your network. How to proceed ? We explain everything to you.

Should we have a wide or narrow network of connections?

It depends on your goals. For some Linkedin users, accepting all connection requests would be absurd, since they prefer to stay connected only with people they already know or those with whom they have esteem or friendship.

And yet, on Linkedin, you shouldn’t think in terms of friendship, as on other social platforms, but rather in terms of skills, interests or sector of activity. Be selective in accepting requests, to better control the composition and quality of your network.

Having a very large network can be advantageous to increase your visibility, but it is useless to have a large number of contacts who rarely interact with your content or who ignore your messages. The rule of thumb is to focus on the quality of your connections rather than the quantity.

Try to surround yourself with people who can have a positive impact on your career who will bring added value or connections with other people who work in the same field, or whom you have met at specific events…

Manage contact requests

It’s easier when you have a clear goal on Linkedin. Do you want to connect with decision makers or managers from a specific sector? Which profiles interest you the most and why? For what knowledge exchange?

If you can’t clearly answer these questions, take the time to think about it. You can establish in advance the criteria for accepting or rejecting applications.

For each new connection request, first try to analyze the person’s LinkedIn profile: who is she, what does she do and why is she asking to contact you? Depending on this, you can classify contact requests into 3 categories: very interesting, moderately interesting and not very or not at all interesting.

If the profile seems interesting to you, send a message before accepting the invitation to ask what prompted the person to contact you. If you do not receive a response, you will understand that this person will not help you increase your visibility since he does not interact with you. As on other social platforms, you will find on LinkedIn users who have only one goal: to expand their contact list. Avoid contact collectors who have no intention of establishing a real relationship or those who send connection requests blindly.

If the person replies to your message, you can discuss your common interests and then you can decide if you want to count them among your Linkedin connections or not.

Joint contacts are also to be considered.

Some tips :

  • If you want to send a connection request, remember to add a personalized note, it’s the most effective way to introduce yourself and increase your chances of being accepted.
  • Linkedin groups can be a great way to find new connections. You can search for the thematic group closest to your interests, comment on discussions or even create new conversations to showcase your skills and knowledge in a specific area.

Using Linkedin to build real relationships certainly takes time, but the results can be impressive.
