According to the USGS, the earthquake occurred at a depth of 16.1 km and its epicenter is located 12 kilometers southwest of the town of Ferndale and about 40 kilometers from the port town of Eureka. For the moment, no tsunami warning has been issued. According to US media, the tremor caused power cuts and was felt inland, including the towns of Redding and Chico.

In a preliminary assessment, the USGS said the likelihood of death or injury was low, but property damage was possible. California is regularly rocked by earthquakes and seismologists warn that it is almost certain that an earthquake capable of causing widespread destruction will strike this state within the next 30 years. In 1994, a 6.7 magnitude earthquake in Northridge, northwest of Los Angeles, killed at least 60 people and caused damage estimated at $10 billion, while a 6.9 to San Francisco in 1989 claimed the lives of 67 people.
