Pompeii was renowned for its wine, which was exported across the Mediterranean. But the city was destroyed by the famous eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. The ruins were finally discovered in the 16th century. It was not until the late 1800s that the vineyards were found, buried under several meters of ash.
Nowadays, the site is producing wine again, but the authorities are about to sign a partnership with the aim of reviving older vineyards and planting new ones.
