A graduate of Moscow State University, then Stony Brook University in New York, in the early 1990s, Zelenov began his career in finance, according to the specialized magazine Forbes. Founder of the Don-Stroy real estate company in 1994, he was behind the construction of Moscow’s first luxury residential towers, such as the Palace of Triumph in 2006, a 57-storey building that was once the most top of Europe in its category. Dmitry Zelenov was then one of the young wolves in the Russian business community, favored by the regime, before being slowed down by the financial crisis of 2008, which would have inflicted heavy losses on him.
